Kray Chen
1987, Singapore
Kray Chen is a visual artist who has lived and worked in Singapore. He finished his Masters of Arts in Fine Arts from Lasalle College of the Arts, Singpore in 2014 and since then he has practiced actively locally and internationally.
In 2013, he had solo exhibitions named “1st Prize” and “It’s A Set Situation” in Singapore. He also participated in group shows such as Art Stage Singapore in 2014, Prudential Eye Award Exhibition in Singapore, The Pleasure of Improbable Placements in Spain, and Paradis Sans Promesse in France, and so on. He has also resided and worked in Hangar (Spain), FRAC Des Pay De La Loire (France), and NTU-CCA, Arts Academy in Singapore.
Krey Chen’s continuous work since 2013 until present, and still ongoing, is a video art named “Exercise Now And Fit A Standard Size Coffin Later”. He used to experience joiningTrim and Fit club (Trim and Fit) during his high school years.The club was a governmental project to prevent obesity in children and became his inspiration for this work.
Kray’s practice largely deals with lived experience and corporeality. Bringing to attention movements, gestures and behaviors of himself and people around him, Kray taps on their exceptional characteristics to discuss the value of progress in Singapore, reflecting on the psyche of a place caught between traditions and modernization.
Kray Chen was the winner for the Young Artist Award in 2017 from Singapore’s National Arts Council. The Young Artist Award was accorded to artists aged 35 years and below, identified as having the potential to play a greater leadership role in Singapore’s artistic development.

เกิด พ.ศ. 2530, พำนักและทำงานที่ สิงคโปร์
ศิลปินทัศนศิลป์รุ่นใหม่จากสิงคโปร์ จบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาโท ด้านศิลปะ วิจิตรศิลป์ในปี พ.ศ. 2557 จาก Lasalle College of the Arts สิงคโปร์ จากนั้นได้ทำงานออกมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง ทั้งในระดับท้องถิ่นและนานาชาติ เคร เฉิน มีงานแสดงเดี่ยว ในปี พ.ศ. 2556 ชื่อ 1st Prize และ It’s A Set Situation ในสิงคโปร์ และร่วมแสดงงานกลุ่ม อาทิ Art Stage Singapore 2557 , นิทรรศการ Prudential Eye Awards สิงคโปร์, The Pleasure of Improbable Placements ที่สเปน และ Paradis Sans Promesse ที่ฝรั่งเศส ฯลฯ นอกจากนี้ ศิลปินยังมีประสบการณ์ การพำนักเพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนและทำงาน ในหลายประเทศ ทั้งที่ แฮงกา สเปน (Hangar, Spain),FRAC Des Pay De La Loire ฝรั่งเศส และ NTU-CCA สถาบันศิลปะในบ้านเกิด โครงการศิลปินทำมาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2556 และยังคงทำต่อเนื่องคือวีดีโออาร์ตชื่อ Exercise Now And Fit A Standard Size Coffin Later หรือ ออกกำลังกายกันวันนี้เพื่อให้รูปร่างพอดีกับโลงศพในอนาคต
เคร เฉิน เคยผ่านประสบการณ์การเข้าชมรม TAF (Trim and Fit) ในวัยมัธยม ซึ่งเป็นโครงการตามนโยบายรัฐบาลเพื่อป้องกันปัญหาโรคอ้วนในเด็ก และเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้เกิดงานชุดนี้ งานของเขามักใช้ร่างกายและการเคลื่อนใหวของตนเองและผู้คนรอบข้าง มาเป็นสื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงความเจริญของสิงคโปร์ที่ให้คุณค่ากับสิ่งภายนอกมากกว่าจิตใจ และความพยายามในการหาพื้นที่ตรงกลางระหว่าง ประเพณีดั้งเดิม กับความทันสมัย
เคร เฉิน เพิ่งได้รับรางวัลใหญ่ศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ (Young Artist Award) ปี 2560 มอบให้โดย สภาศิลปะแห่งชาติสิงคโปร์ (Singapore’s National Arts Council)
