Marina  Abramovic

1946 Belgrade – Yugoslavia, lives and works in Europe and USA

Marina Abramovic is one of the most influential female performers since the 2000s onward. She is considered a widely accepted pioneer of performance arts and live performance.

The artist began her career in Belgrade during the early 1970s. Abramovic has pioneered performance as a visual art form, creating some of the most important early works. The body has always been both her subject and medium. She is known for works that dramatically test the endurance and limitations of her own body and mind. Exploring her physical and mental limits in works that ritualize the simple actions of everyday life; she has withstood pain, exhaustion, and danger in her quest for emotional and spiritual transformation.

Abramovic is interested in the fragility of life and death, believing that physical pain and fatigue lead to the realization of the existence of ourselves, resulting in a relationship between the performer and the audience, expecting the spectators to be part of the show.

Rhythm O (1974) in Belgrade, Abramovic introduced herself as an object while the audience were allowed to use 72 pieces of equipment to do anything on her own body. The resultutterly shocked her and led her to realize how twisted and cruel humanity can be from within. From 1975–1988, Abramovic and a German artist, UweLaysiepen or Ulay, performed together, dealing with relations of duality such as Imponderabilia and Relation in Movement (1977). Abramovic returned to solo performances in 1989.

Her performances included “The House With The Ocean View” at Sean Kelly Gallery, New York (2002), Abramovic stayed 12 days without eating, writing, or speaking over 3 units of the corridors at the height of 6 feet.Spectators got to observe her daily activities of sleeping, drinking, taking bladder, and even showering. One work piece to have made Abramovic widely renowned was “The Artist is Present” (2010) at Museum of Modern Art, New York. The work featured her sitting daily for 8 hours over the course of 3 months, all the while allowing queued audiences to be able to sit in front of her for a few minutes each.

Abramovic has presented her work at leading art galleries and museums in USA and Europe, including the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (1985), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1990), Neue National Galerie, Berlin(1993), and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1995).

She has also participated in international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (1976 and 1997) and Documenta VI, VII, and IX, Kassel (1977, 1982 and 1992). She was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the 1997 Venice Biennale for the video installation and performance “Balkan Baroque.”

Abramovic founded the Marina Abramovic Institute (MAI), to create new possibilities for collaboration among thinkers of all fields.
