Phaptawan Suwannakudt

1959, Born in Thailand, Lives and work in Australia

Born in Thailand, Phaptawan has been exhibiting nationally and internationally for over twenty years.  Her style developed from bearing witness to her late father’spractice, the renowned Thai traditional mural painter Paiboon Suwannakudt.

Phaptawan continues her ongoing personal narrative exploring representation, culture, and sense of place, or home-ness.  Her skills as a storyteller and narrator of the social consciousness are evident in her work as she incorporates the delicate scribing of Thai texts, and the intricate depictions of figures, places, and beasts.

Since moving to Australia in 1996, her aesthetic has dealt with the politics of locality and dislocation.  Her voice engages with stories of Buddha, mythology, and Thai traditions, and traces her own spiritual and physical history of transformation, while still relating poignantly to contemporary experiences of her Australian context.

In the continuation of her active, artistic career, Phaptawan has been invited to partake in the 2012 Sydney Biennale. During her practice thus far, she has worked extensively on numerous full-scale temple schemes and private commissions in Thailand. She was also instrumental in the establishment of Womanifesto, a biannual, international art exchange program.
