Ralf Tooten

1958, Duisburg, Germany

Ralph Tooten, born in Germany’s Rhineland, completed his apprenticeship in architectural photography between 1975-78 with Master Photographer Clemens Hartzenbusch from Cologne.

The artist has worked in Europe for prominent companies, advertising agencies, magazines and art exhibitions since he won the first prize for a magazine’s photography competition with his joyful portraits of Russian soldiers. He worked as a still photographer in several movie productions such as Volker Schlöndorff, the Academy Award-winning “The Tin Drum” by Novel price winner Gunter Grass and Margarethe von Trotta, the Golden Lion winning “Two German sisters”.

Fascinated by the aesthetics of visual encounters, the personal radiance of human beings, and passionate admiration for great architecture of all centuries, Tooten places the main focus of his work as a photographer on architecture, landscape, and portrait photography.

Enthralled by the exotic aesthetics of the Asian megalopolis, Tooten has spent years documenting the city’s after-dark activities, which he published in the 2009 book, Bangkok Noir. Now with the support of the Goethe Institute and under the curatorial guidance of Ver Gallery director Josef Ng, Tooten has transferred his shadowy diary into an atmospheric multimedia exhibition at the National Gallery.
