Fiona Margaret Hall

Fiona Margaret Hall is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. She first emerged in the 1970s as a photographer, but during the 1980s transitioned to using a diverse range of art forms. Her ever-growing repertoire includes sculpture, painting, installation, garden design and video.

Hall’s choice of material, and the way she uses it, is critical to her art. It speaks to the audiencethrough engagement with contemporary life in intriguing ways, created from an Australian perspective. Hall deliberately transforms ordinary everyday objects to address a range of contemporary issues such as globalization, consumerism, colonialism and natural history.

The core theme throughout Hall’s work is the relationship between nature and culture. Throughout her career, Hall has also maintained a lifelong commitment to teaching and study as a means of furthering her art.

Hall is arguably best known for her erotic sardine can series, ParadisusTerrestris. First appearing in 1990, this three-part series depicts the intersection of plant and human culture. Within each half-opened can sits a naked human body part, while plant life sprouts above. Beneath these top two layers, Hall added language. Via the three convergence, Hall aims to make her audience consider what we share with plants.

In 2008, Hall arranged a retrospective exhibition “Fiona Force Field” at Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and moved to show in New Zealand in 2009. Also in 2009, she joined The Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art in Moscow and she became the winner of Premier’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ruby Awards – South Australia’s Arts and Cultural Awards. In 2015, she was the Australian representative in Venice Biennale; her work, “Wrong Way Time” was exhibited.The same work was also exhibited at The National Gallery of Australia. And in 2012, Hall joined 13^th Documenta in Kassel, Germany.

Hall’s career spans four decades, and continues unabated. She is an extraordinarily energetic artist. Her work is presented in every major public art collection in Australia. She exhibits regularly in Australia and overseas.

ฟิโอนา มากาเร็ต ฮอล์ล เป็นศิลปินร่วมสมัยแถวหน้าของออสเตรเลีย จบการศึกษาด้านจิตรกรรมที่ East Sydney Technical College ในปี พ.ศ. 2515 แต่ด้วยความที่สนใจงานประติมากรรมและภาพถ่าย เธอจึงเลือกเรียนภาพถ่ายเป็นวิชารอง ควบคู่ไปกับการเรียนด้านภาพพิมพ์

ฮอล์ลเริ่มทำงานภาพถ่ายอย่างจริงจังตั้งแต่ยุค80s ก่อนจะขยายสู่การทำงานศิลปะรูปแบบอื่นๆ ทั้งงานประติมากรรม,จิตรกรรม, ศิลปะจัดวาง,งานออกแบบสวน ไปจนถึงงานวิดีโอ การเลือกวัสดุและวิธีการหยิบมาใช้ ถือเป็นหัวใจหลักในงานทำงานของฮอล์ล งานของเธอสื่อสารกับผู้ชมเพราะมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับวิถีชีวิตร่วมสมัยในแบบฉบับเฉพาะ ที่สร้างจากมุมมองของคนออสเตรเลีย ฮอล์ลจงใจแปรสภาพของวัตถุที่พบเห็นในชีวิตประจำวัน เพื่อเสนอประเด็นร่วมสมัยต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น โลกาภิวัฒน์ บริโภคนิยม การล่าอาณานิคม หรือประวัติศาสตร์ทางธรรมชาติ

ฮอลล์เป็นที่รู้จักอย่างมากจากผลงานอีโรติคบนกระป๋องปลาซาร์ดีน ชือ Paradisus Terrestris สร้างในปี พ.ศ. 2533 งานที่พยายามเชื่อมจุดบรรจบของวัฒนธรรม มนุษย์กับต้นไม้ บนแต่ละกระป๋องจะเผยให้เห็นรูปทรงบางส่วนที่เปลือยเปล่าของร่างกายมนุษย์ที่มีต้นไม้แต่ละชนิดงอกออกมาจากด้านบน มีคำบรรยายทางพฤกษศาสตร์ของต้นไม้แต่ละชนิดอยู่ด้านล่าง ศิลปินพยายามสื่อให้เห็นถึงสิ่งที่เราและธรรมชาติมีร่วมกัน

ฟิโอนา ฮอล์ล มีประวัติการแสดงผลงานในประเทศและนานาชาติมากมาย อาทิ ปี พ.ศ.2543 และ 2553 ร่วมแสดงงานในเทศกาล Biennale of Sydney ออสเตรเลีย, ในปี พ.ศ. 2543 ฮอล์ล ยังได้รับทุนจากเมืองซิดนีย์ให้สร้างประติมากรรมกลางแจ้ง ชื่อ A Folly for Mrs. Macquarie เพื่อติดตั้งใน Royal Botanic Garden โดยงานชิ้นนี้สืบค้นไปยังแนวคิดสมัยยุคล่าอาณานิคม ที่พยายามทำให้ความเป็นแปลกใหม่เฉพาะถิ่นกลายเป็นสิ่งสามัญที่คุ้นเคย  

ฮอล์ลมีนิทรรศการย้อนหลัง ในปี พ.ศ. 2551 ชื่อ “Fiona Force Field” ที่ Museum of Contemporary Art ซิดนีย์ ก่อนที่นิทรรศการจะสัญจรไปที่ประเทศนิวซีแลนด์, ในปี พ.ศ. 2552 ร่วมแสดงงาน The Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art กรุงมอสโคว์ และในปีเดียวกัน เธอได้รับรางวัล Premier’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ruby Awards – South Australia’s Arts and Cultural Awards, ในปี พ.ศ. 2558 เป็นตัวแทนประเทศออสเตรเลีย ในเทศกาลศิลปะเวนิส เบียนนาเล่ ในผลงานศิลปะจัดวางชื่อ  Wrong Way Time ผลงานชุดนี้ยังได้แสดงที่ The National Gallery of Australia ในปีต่อมา พ.ศ. 2555 ฮอล์ล ได้เข้าร่วมแสดงงานในเทศกาล DOCUMENTA ครั้งที่ 13 ที่เมืองคาสเซิล ประเทศเยอรมัน
