Francesco Clemente

Francesco Clemente is an Italian contemporary artist. He is one of the most highly regarded painters in the world. He was central to the resurgence of painting in the 1980s. His experience in staying in many countries reflects an inspiration of his works. He has worked with various artistic media including drawing, fresco, graphics, mosaic, oils and sculpture. Part figurative and part abstract, his paintings and drawings explore the mysteries of human life. His subjects are drawn from myth, religion, and popular culture that reflect people’s lives. He lives and works in Italy, India, and New York.

Clemente was born and grew up in Naples, Italy. In 1970, he studied Architecture at University of Rome. Then three years later, he decided to settle himself in India, which broughttremendous change to his life. He studied and worked with local artists on natural paper making, miniature painting, including studying language and Hindi religion. Influences from Indian arts, traditions, religions, and cultures are also reflected in his work outstandingly later on.

He was among the principal figures of the Italian Transavanguardia movement of the 1980s, which was characterized by a rejection of Formalism and conceptual art and a return to figurative art and Symbolism.

In 1980, Clemente joined the Italian Transavanguardia and later in 1981 he moved to New York and started to work with Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Allen Ginsberg who became known as Neo-Expressionist artists during 1980s. However, Clemente denied himself to be in any art movement principals. In an alternate aspect, he seeks to broadcast his work to a wider audience by joining with Alfonso Cuaron, a film director of Great Expectation, where he painted over 200 new works paintings shown in the film.

Clemente currently lives and works in New York with occasional visits to major events in India. In 2013, he joined “Francesco Clemente: Encampment” in India, where he and Indian local artist created tent village and exhibited to audiences in 2015. He called his work “painting that you can walk in”. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the world’s leading galleries including The Museum of Modern Arts in New York, Arts Institute of Chicago, Kunstmuseum Basel, and Tate Gallery in London.

ศิลปินร่วมสมัยชาวอิตาเลียนที่ดึงประสบการณ์จากการพำนักในหลายประเทศมาเป็นแรงบันดาลใจในการสร้างงาน ผลงานของคเลเมนเต้มีความหลากหลายในการใช้เทคนิคและวัสดู ตั้งแต่การวาดเส้น,เฟรสโก้,กราฟฟิค,โมเสค,สีน้ำ, สีน้ำมันไปจนถึงประติมากรรม จิตรกรรมของเขามีลักษณะกึ่งฝันกึ่งจินตนาการ และความลึกลับทางเพศและจิตวิญญาณ งานของเขาสะท้อนการทดลองผ่านการวางองค์ประกอบที่อยู่ร่วมกันของสัญลักษณ์ ภาพเหมือน และรูปทรงของมนุษย์ เขาผสมผสานรูปลักษณ์ต่างๆ ที่มาจากศิลปะประเพณีและเชื่อมโยงเข้ากับอารมณ์ความรู้สึกของประสบการณ์ทั่วไปในชีวิตประจำวันของพวกเรา

คเลเมนเต้ เกิดและเติบโตที่เมืองเนเปิลส์ ประเทศอิตาลี เขาเข้าเรียนทางด้านสถาปัตยกรรมที่มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งกรุงโรม ในปี พ.ศ. 2513 ก่อนที่จะตัดสินใจเดินทางไปยังดินแดนที่ห่างไกลคือ ”อินเดีย” 3 ปี ต่อมา  ซึ่งถือเป็นการเดินทางที่เปลี่ยนชีวิตของเขาทีเดียว ที่อินเดีย คเลเมนเต้ได้ร่วมงานกับช่างและศิลปินท้องถิ่น เรียนรู้การทำกระดาษแบบธรรมชาติและจิตรกรรมแบบย่อส่วน (miniature painting) รวมทั้งศึกษาภาษาและคัมภีร์ศาสนาฮินดู อิทธิพลที่ได้รับจากศิลปะประเพณีแบบอินเดีย ตลอดจนศาสนาและวัฒนธรรมดั้งเดิมของอินเดียยังคงสะท้อนอยู่ในผลงานของเขาอย่างเด่นชัดในเวลาต่อมา

ในปี พ.ศ. 2523 คเลเมนเต้ได้เข้าร่วมกับกลุ่มศิลปิน Transavanguardia ของอิตาลี และหลังจากกลับมาที่เมืองนิวยอร์คในปี พ.ศ. 2524 เขาเริ่มทำงานร่วมกับ ณอง มิเชล บาสเกีย, แอนดี้ วอร์ฮอล และ อัลเลน กินส์เบิร์ก จนเป็นที่รู้จักกันในนามศิลปินแนวนีโอเอ็กเพรสชั้นนิสม์ ตลอดช่วงคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1980s อย่างไรก็ดี คเลเมนเต้ปฎิเสธที่จะถูกจัดให้อยู่ในหมวดหมู่ หรือลัทธิความเคลื่อนไหวในรูปแบบทางศิลปะใดๆ นอกจากนี้เขายังค้นหาช่องทางใหม่ในการเผยแพร่การสร้างสรรค์งาน ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่ทำให้ผู้ชมทั่วไปได้รู้จักเขาในวงกว้างมากยิ่งขึ้น เมื่อเขาร่วมงานกับผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์ อัลฟอนโซ คูอารอน ในปี พ.ศ. 2541 ซึ่งคเลเมนเต้ ได้เขียนภาพกว่า 200 ภาพ ขึ้นใหม่เพื่อให้ปรากฎอยู่ในภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Great Expectations

คเลเมนเต้ยังคงพำนักและทำงานที่เมืองนิวยอร์ค แม้จะมีการไปร่วมงานสำคัญๆ ที่อินเดียอยู่บ้าง เช่นงาน “Francesco Clemente: Encampment” หมู่บ้านเต๊นท์ ที่เริ่มทำในปี 2556 ด้วยความร่วมมือจากศิลปินท้องถิ่นชาวอินเดีย และเสร็จพร้อมแสดงเมื่อปี 2558 คเลเมนเต้ เรียกมันว่า “ภาพวาดที่คุณสามารถเดินเข้าไปได้” นอกจากนี้ผลงานของเขาอยู่ในการสะสมของพิพิธภัณฑ์สำคัญหลายแห่ง เช่นที่ พิพิธภัณฑ์สมัยใหม่ นิวยอร์ค, สถาบันศิลปะชิคาโก คุนส์มิวเซียม บาเซิล และเททแกลเลอรี่ที่ ลอนดอน เป็นต้น
