Yan Pei Ming uses the strokes of his brushes and monochromic colors as the major parts of his artistic identity. Yan painted portraits of many prominent figures such as Michael Jackson, Bruce Lee, Pablo Picasso and Mao Zedong in black and white or red and white that earned him wide recognition.

For the Bangkok Art Biennale, Yan paints one of the most personal portraits of his life. Having recently lost his mother, Yan commented, the work represents the image of the mother in memory through repeat paintings created over and over again, not only expressing the endless missing, but also helping me complete the dialogue within the soul.

หยาน เพ่ย หมิง วาดภาพเหมือน (portrait) ของบุคคลสำคัญหลายๆ คนในศตวรรษ ที่ 20 เช่น ไมเคิล แจ็คสัน, บรูซ ลี, ปาโบล ปีกัสโซ รวมไปถึง ‘Epic-sized’ ภาพเหมือนขนาดใหญ่ ของเหมา เจ๋อตงสีขาวดำและแดงขาว ซึ่งถือเป็นงานที่ทำให้เขาเป็นที่รู้จักในหมู่สาธารณชน

สำหรับบางกอก อาร์ต เบียนนาเล่ ครั้งนี้ ศิลปินมาพร้อมกับภาพวาดบุคคลที่มีความเกี่ยวพันกับชีวิตเขาในระดับส่วนตัว นั่นคือภาพวาดของมารดาที่เพิ่งจากไป ศิลปินให้ความเห็นว่าผลงานชิ้นนี้เกิดจากการนำความทรงจำที่มีต่อแม่ของเขามาทำเป็นงานศิลปะผ่านการลงสีซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่า ซึ่งนอกเหนือจากจะเป็นการแสดงออกถึงความคิดถึงบุคคลผู้ล่วงลับ มันยังช่วยให้เขาสามารถสื่อสารไปถึงจิตวิญญาณของเขาได้อย่างสมบูรณ์
