Art Labor

Art Labor is an artist collective based in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The group was founded in 2012 by Thao-Nguyen Phan, Truong Cong Tung, and Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran. Their projects work through the spaces between visual culture, social action, and life sciences in various public contexts and locals. It seeks “to produce alternative and non-formal knowledge through artistic and cultural activities in unconventional and public contexts.” The collective does not produce any single art work; instead, it develops long-term journeys during which a seed takes root and then morphs into a rhizome of projects. Art Labor has presented work in museums in Paris, Guangzhou, Singapore, and Warsaw.
Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran, curator
Arlette Quynh-Anh Tran (b. 1987, Berlin) lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). She has participated in various cultural and visual art projects as coordinator, curator, researcher or advisor. She is currently a member of Art Labor, and Assistant Curator at Sàn Art. In 2007 she curatorially assisted Rirkrit Tiravanija and Gridthiya Gaweewong for the Saigon Open City project, the first large-scale biannual exhibition of contemporary art in Vietnam. Tran is also a writer on creativity and contemporary art for a number of publications. Recently, she curated series of Sàn Art Productions x PhuongMy (2013-now), Echoing Nostalgia. Collecting Countermemory (2013), Unconditional Belief (2014) and was a researcher for Asia Art Archive (2011-13).
Thao-Nguyen Phan, artist
Through literature, philosophy and daily life, Phan Thảo Nguyên observes ambiguous issues in social convention, history and tradition. An honours graduate from Singapore’s Lasalle College of the Arts in 2009, four years later Phan Thảo Nguyên received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).Today, in addition to her work as a multimedia artist, she has joined forces with artist Trương Công Tùng and curator Arlette Quỳnh-Anh Trần to form Art Labor. This collective explores cross-disciplinary practices and develops art projects that will benefit the local community. Phan Thảo Nguyên is expanding her “theatrical fields”, including what she calls performance gesture and moving images. Phan Thảo Nguyên has exhibited widely in Southeast Asia and is a 2016-2017 Rolex Protégée, mentored by internationally acclaimed, New York-based, performance and video artist, Joan Jonas.
Truong Cong Tung, artist
Truong Cong Tung was born in Dak Lak, Vietnam, Tung currently lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. He graduated from the Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts University in 2010 with a degree in Lacquer Painting. His works are a combination of video, installation, painting and found objects that reflects his personal thoughts, social changes and the issue of race, religion and politics. Tung had shown in places such as San Art, Nha San Collective, SeMA biennale, Seoul Museum of Art, Korea and Koganecho Bazzar, Yokohama, Japan.

อาร์ต เลเบอร์ กลุ่มศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ที่มีสมาชิก3 คนได้ตัดสินใจรวมตัวกันเพื่อ กลับไปพำนักและสร้างงานศิลปะที่โฮจิมินห์ ซิตี้ ประเทศเวียดนาม ประกอบด้วย ภัณฑารักษ์ นักวิจัย และนักเขียนได้แก่ อาร์เลตต์ ควิน อันห์ ทราน (เกิด 2530, เบอร์ลิน เยอรมัน) กับสองสมาชิก ศิลปินชาวเวียดนาม เถา เหงียนฟาน และต่วง คงถัง
นับตั้งแต่ก่อตั้งจนถึงปัจจุบัน อาร์ต เลเบอร์ สร้างโครงการศิลปะที่หลากหลาย พวกเขาทำงานร่วมกับนักมนุษยวิทยา คนทำภาพยนตร์, ภัณฑารักษ์, นักเขียน, นักจดหมายเหตุ, ศิลปิน ไปจนถึงจักษุแพทย์, คนไข้, ชาวนาและนักธุรกิจ ฯลฯ สร้างกิจกรรมทางสังคม ส่งเสริมให้ผู้คนในท้องถิ่นได้ใช้ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ และทดลองขยายขอบเขตของงานศิลปะ ในหลายรูปแบบ ให้เข้ากับบริบทด้านต่างๆ ของสังคมและชุมชนในเวียดนาม เพื่อท้าทายว่า ขอบเขต หรือกรอบของ “ศิลปะ”นั้น มีจริงหรือไม่ ในทางกลับกันพวกเขาแสวงหาช่องทางการสร้างองค์ความรู้ทางเลือก และการทำงานในรูปแบบใหม่ในพื้นที่สาธารณะ ผ่านช่องว่างระหว่างวัฒนธรรมที่จับต้องได้ และการแสดงออกของสังคมต่อความเชื่อ, ศาสนา, กรอบความคิด ตลอดจนวิทยาศาสตร์กับชีวิต โดยไม่ได้มุ่งหวังการสร้างงานศิลปะเป็นชิ้นๆ แต่เป็นการเพาะเมล็ดพันธุ์บางอย่างที่ต้องให้เวลาและการเดินทางในการเติบโต
โครงการที่มีการตอบรับอย่างดีทั้งในเชิงบวกและเชิงวิพากษ์ คือ “Jrai Dew projects” ที่พูดถึงสังคมรวมศูนย์ของเวียดนาม สะท้อนผ่านตำนานความเชื่อของเผ่า”จราย” กลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ ซึ่งอาศัยอยู่บริเวณพื้นที่สูงตอนกลางของเวียดนาม ชาวจรายนับถือผี เป็นสังคมที่ถูกควบคุมด้วยอำนาจศักดิ์สิทธิ์โดยเฉพาะพิธีกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับความตาย และเชื่อในชีวิตหลังความตาย มีการสร้างสุสานแห่งจิตวิญญาณ เพื่อรวมวิญญาณของผู้ล่วงลับไว้ด้วยกัน
