Canan graduated from Marmara University, Fine Arts Faculty. She has participated in residency programs in Istanbul, USA, and Germany.
Canan, defined self as an Activist Feminist, takes the relation between social power structure and the body of women as the theme of her new work, and displays them through videos, paintings, installations, and crafting beginning in the 90’s. Her outstanding solo exhibitionsfeatured “Even a Cat has a Mustache” (2010), “Turkish Delight” (2012) at Gallery X-ist, Istanbul, “I Beg You Please Do Not Speak To Me Of Love” (2014) at Siyah Beyaz Gallery, Ankara, and “Shining Darkness”(2016) at Rampa Gallery, Istanbul.
Over the past decade, Canan had engaged with ancient Islamic cosmology, exploring the emergence of figures such as the jinn in relations to modern and contemporary moral frameworks. The works produced range from sculpture and photography to print, embroidery, video, installation, and traditional miniature painting. While the media are extremely diverse, the exhibitions coherently explore the persistence of religious and mythical paradigms in defining the value and meaning of human life, especially in relations to the systems that uphold the importance of gender, nationality, and racial categories of identification.
Canan’s solo exhibition, entitled “Behind Mount Qaf.” (2017) at Istanbul’s Arter gallery, included works produced through various media such as sculptures, photography, print, embroidery, videos, installations, and miniatures.Her new works focus on tackling the repressed aspects of human psyche in the form of supernatural creatures, importance of gender, and social power structure.
She has participated in group exhibitions such as “the Global Feminism”(2007) Brooklyn Museum in New York, 11th Istanbul Biennale (2009), “ACT V: Power Alone” (2010) at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, Netherland, “In What Language Shall I Tell You My Story” (2012) at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, “Signs Taken in Wonder”(2013) at MAK Museum, Vienna and Kunstverein Haanover, Germany, “Too Early, Too Late: Middle East and Modernity” (2015) at Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, Italy, “Jameel Prize 4” (2016) at Pera Museum, Istanbul, and “Mother Tongue” (2017) at Interkulturelt Museum Oslo.

จานัน จบการศึกษาคณะวิจิตรศิลป์ จากมหาวิทยาลัย มาร์มารา และได้เข้าร่วมในโครงการ “ศิลปินพำนัก” ในอิสตันบูล , สหรัฐอเมริกา และเยอรมนี จานัน เรียกตัวเองว่า นักเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อสิทธิสตรี เธอเชื่อในพลังของสังคม และ การใช้เรือนร่างของผู้หญิงเพื่อถ่ายทอดผลงาน ทั้งในงานสื่อผสม, หัตถกรรม, จิตรกรรม, ศิลปะจัดวาง ไปจนถึงงานวิดีโอ เธอมีผลงานต่อเนื่องออกมาตั้งแต่ต้นคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1990s นิทรรศการเดี่ยวที่สำคัญของเธอมีอาทิ เช่น “Even a Cat has a Mustache” (พ.ศ. 2553) และ “Turkish Delight” (พ.ศ. 2555 ) ที่ Gallery X-ist อิสตันบุล, “I Beg You Please Do Not Speak To Me Of Love” (พ.ศ. 2557) ที่ Siyah Beyaz Gallery เมืองอังการ่า, “Shining Darkness” (พ.ศ. 2559) ที่ Rampa Gallery อิสตันบุล โดยงานในช่วงทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา ศิลปินได้นำแนวคิดทางจักรวาลวิทยาของชาวอิสลามโบราณมาใช้ สืบค้นถึงการเกิดรูปทรงอย่างเช่น “ผีเปรต” (jinn) ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับกรอบศีลธรรมของสังคมสมัยใหม่ ผ่านรูปแบบผลงานทั้งที่เป็นประติมากรรม ภาพถ่าย งานปัก งานวิดีโอ งานจัดวางและภาพเขียนย่อส่วนแบบโบราณ (miniature paintings) ในขณะที่สื่อมีความหลากหลาย แต่เนื้อหายังคงเน้นย้ำถึงกระบวนทัศน์ทางความเชื่อที่เป็นตัวกำหนดคุณค่า และความหมายของชีวิตผู้คน ต่อเนื่องจนเป็นระบบที่ให้ความสำคัญกับเพศสภาพ เชื้อชาติ และการแบ่งหมวดหมู่อัตลักษณ์
