Choi Jeong Hwa 

1963,Seoul, Korea

He is an artist and designer whose work moves between the disciplines of visual art, graphic design, industrial design and architecture. Inspired by the harmony and chaos of the urban environment, Choi undermines the hierarchy of the museum by installing his pieces on the outside of buildings.

His playful practice comments on the privileged environment of art institutions and questions the prized status of artworks amidst a consumer-frenzied world.

He is well known forlarge scale surreal installations from found objects. He constructed a 10-storey building installation made from 1,000 discarded doors, and decorated Seoul’s Olympic Stadium with garlands made from 2 million pieces of trash, transforming the building’s surface into glittering, jeweled structure. In his other pieces, he explores ideas of artificiality and permanence through the use of plastic, food, and flowers.

Choi participated in many Art festivals and exhibitions. He was the Korean representative in “Secret Beyond the Door”(2005), at Venice Biennale, Italy. He participated in the Open-Air Exhibition(2006) at Middleheim Museum, Antwerp, Belgium, Special project, Vivocity(2006) at Singapore Biennale, Singapore, Peppermint Candy(2006) at Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Santiago, Chile, Arcadia(2007) at exposition d’art contemporain au chateau d’oiron, France, solo exhibition Paradise(2008) at Point Ephemere Paris, France, and Accumulation(2009) at Pekin Fine Arts, Beijing, China.

He declines to categorize his work, leaving the audience to define his pieces at a personal level, as his motto states: “My art is your heart”.

ชเว จอง ฮวา เป็นศิลปินและนักออกแบบที่สร้างงานในหลายรูปแบบ เขาถนัดทั้งงานทัศนศิลป์ ออกแบบกราฟฟิค อุตสาหกรรมและสถาปัตยกรรม โดยได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจากสภาพแวดล้อมรอบตัวที่มีทั้งความสงบสุข และความวุ่นวายของสภาพชีวิตในเมืองหลวง เขาไม่ยึดติดกับระบบการจัดแสดงงานในพิพิธภัณฑ์ และติดตั้งผลงานของเขาบริเวณด้านนอกอาคารแทน

การเล่นกับพื้นที่สาธารณะที่เปิดโอกาสให้เขามีกลุ่มผู้ชมที่หลากหลายและสามารถวิพากษ์ผลงานของเขาได้อย่างอิสระ กลายเป็นเครื่องหมายคำถามขนาดใหญ่ถึงสถานะอันทรงเกียรติของสถาบันศิลปะต่างๆ  รวมไปจนถึงการประกวดและการให้รางวัลงานศิลปะในโลกทุนนิยมนี้อีกด้วย

ชเว จอง ฮวา เป็นที่รู้จักจากงานประติมากรรมลมขนาดใหญ่ ที่ขยายจากสิ่งต่างๆ ที่พบเห็นได้ในชีวิตประจำวัน งานของเขามักจะเต็มไปด้วยสีสันสดใสเสมอ เช่น งานศิลปะจัดวางที่ ใช้ซากประตูเก่าที่ถูกทิ้ง มาเรียงต่อกันสูงถึง 10 ชั้น หรือการตกแต่งสนามกีฬาโซลโอลิมปิค สเตเดียม ด้วยพวงมาลัยที่ทำจากขยะรีไซเคิลกว่า 2 ล้านชิ้น จนเนรมิตให้อาคารสเตเดียมแห่งนั้นกลายเป็นอัญมณีที่ส่องแสงเปล่งประกาย ไปจนถึงงานดอกไม้พลาสติกขนาดใหญ่ที่เคลื่อนไหวราวกับหายใจได้ เพื่อสะท้อนแนวความคิดเรื่องความเทียมและความไม่คงทนถาวร

ชเว เข้าร่วมงานเทศกาลศิลปะและแสดงงานในพื้นที่ต่างๆ มาแล้วมากมาย เช่น เป็นตัวแทนประเทศเกาหลี ในศาลาของประเทศ นิทรรศการ Secret Beyond the Door เวนิส เบียนนาเล่ อิตาลี (พ.ศ.2548), นิทรรศการกลางแจ้ง ที่ Middleheim Museum, อาร์นทเวิร์บ, เบลเยี่ยม (2549),โครงการพิเศษที่ศูนย์การค้า Vivocity ส่วนหนึ่งของสิงคโปร์ เบียนนาเล่  สิงคโปร์ (2549), Peppermint Candy, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, ซานติเอโก ชิลี (2550), Arcadia, exposition d’art contemporain au chateau d’oiron, ฝรั่งเศส (2551), นิทรรศการเดี่ยว Paradise ที่ Point Ephemere ปารีส ฝรั่งเศส (2551), นิทรรศการ Accumulation ที่ Pekin Fine Arts กรุงปักกิ่ง ประเทศจีน (2552) เป็นต้น

ชเว ปฏิเสธที่จะให้คำจำกัดความใดๆ เกี่ยวกับประเภทงานของเขา เพราะเขาต้องการเปิดกว้างให้ผู้ชมได้พิจารณากันตามประสบการณ์ของแต่ละคน ดังคำกล่าวประจำใจของเขา “Your heart is My art” หรือ หัวใจของคุณ คืองานศิลปะของผมนั่นเอง
