Lee Bul

Korean female artist Lee Bul’s multifaceted artistic practice spans more than 20 years, encompassing drawing, performance, sculpture, installation and video. She is recognized for her technically precise, futuristic sculptures and architecturally influenced, large-scale, immersive installations. Lee Bul’s works deal with visionary narratives, and themes such as the legacy of modernism, the potential of technology, gender and sexuality, the limits of the human body and its interface with the mechanistic, the role of popular culture in the formation of identity, and humankind’s obsession with perfection. She lives and works in Seoul – South Korea.

She studied sculpture during 1980s under military government. In 1989, her live performance, Untitled (Cravings Black), the soft fabric sculpture was shown in public as symbol of modernization. Lee Bul was inside a huge, distorted-figure monster, walkingalong the street in South Korea and Japan to witness reaction from viewers and passer-bys. She utilized soft cloths to resemble the artist’s body parts that became twisted and distorted.In the same year, her live performance named Abortion was conducted by hanging herself naked from the ceiling whilereciting words amidst facing bodily pain.

In recent years, Lee Bul has engaged more deeply with the exploration of social structures and ideas surrounding the pursuit of utopia through increasingly large-scale installations that incorporate significant structural elements, often referencing science fiction and innovations of modernity. Willing To Be Vulnerable, 2016, is a new, site-specific work created for the Turbine Hall of the Industrial Precinct on Cockatoo Island, a central focus of the Embassy of the Real. The work is monumental in scale, filling the cathedral-sized, 1640-square-metre industrial space with forms that echo the shapes of the landscape, creating a network of memory that is emblematic of the dreams and aspirations of humanity.

Lee Bul has been invited to exhibit her work in leading international museum and art festival. In mid-2018, her retrospective solo exhibition was set in Hayward Gallery, London, where more than 100 works since 1980s were presented.

อี บุล เป็นศิลปินหญิงที่ทำงานหลากหลายสาขามากว่า 20 ปี ไม่ว่าจะเป็นงานวาดเส้น, ศิลปะสื่อการแสดงสด, ประติมากรรม, ศิลปะจัดวางและวิดีโอ เธอเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวางจากงานประติมากรรมแบบโลกอนาคต ใช้เทคนิคพิเศษเฉพาะ บวกกับโครงสร้างเชิงสถาปัตยกรรมที่มีมิติและกินพื้นที่ขนาดใหญ่ งานของเธอสะท้อนผลพวงของความทันสมัย ศักยภาพของเทคโนโลยี เพศสภาพ และขีดจำกัดระหว่างความสัมพันธ์ของมนุษย์กับเครื่องจักร ตลอดจนบทบาทของวัฒนธรรมป็อบต่อการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ของปัจเจกชน และความลุ่มหลงของมนุษย์ในความสมบูรณ์แบบ

บุล เริ่มเรียนประติมากรรมในช่วงคริสต์ทศวรรษ 80s ในยุคเศรษฐกิจภายใต้เผด็จการรัฐบาลทหาร เธอค่อนข้างกบฎต่อระบบการศึกษาและสังคมที่แข็งตัว เริ่มจากทดลองทำงานศิลปะสื่อการแสดงสดในที่สาธารณะเช่น สนามบิน ใจกลางเมือง ที่เปรียบเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความเจริญ เพื่อทดสอบปฎิกิริยาจากผู้ชม ในปี พ.ศ. 2532 บุล ในชุดสัตว์ประหลาดขนาดใหญ่ที่มีรูปทรงบิดเบี้ยว เดินอยู่บนท้องถนนในเกาหลี่ใต้ และญี่ปุ่น ภายใต้งานขื่อ Untitled (Cravings Black) รูปลักษณ์ของสัตว์ประหลาดนี้ คือ การนำอวัยวะจากร่างกายศิลปิน เช่นแขน ขา ลำไส้ มาทำให้ดูบิดเบี้ยว ในลักษณะประติมากรรมผ้าที่นุ่มนิ่ม ในปีเดียวกันเธอมีผลงานการแสดงสดชื่อ Abortion โดยห้อยหัวจากเพดาน ในร่างเปลือยเปล่า เปล่งข้อความในขณะเผชิญหน้ากับความเจ็บปวดของร่างกาย  

สองสามปีให้หลัง อี บุล ให้ความสนใจมากขึ้นในเรื่องโครงสร้างสังคม และแนวคิดการค้นหาโลกในอุดมคติ ผ่านการสร้างงานที่มีโครงสร้างขนาดใหญ่ขึ้น ซึ่งรวมองค์ประกอบต่างๆ ที่อ้างอิงถึงนิยายวิทยาศาสตร์หรือนวัตกรรมสำคัญๆ  ของโลกสมัยใหม่ โครงการล่าสุดที่อธิบายสิ่งที่บุล สนใจได้เป็นอย่างดีคือ Willing To Be Vulnerable ที่จัดแสดงบนเกาะคอคคาทู พื้นที่โรงงานอุตสาหกรรมที่เลิกใช้งานแล้ว ในเทศกาลศิลปะ ซิดนีย์ เบียนนาเล ออสเตรเลีย ในปี พ.ศ. 2559 เป็นผลงานขนาดมหึมา ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ 1,640 ตรม. มีทั้งเครื่องบิน เหล็ก พลาสติก และวัสดุอื่นๆ ที่หลากหลาย มาประกอบร่างกับกลไกไฮโดรลิก เกิดการเคลื่อนไหวจนกลายเป็นงานขนาดใหญ่ขยายจนเต็มพื้นที่ ราวกับเป็นดินแดนที่เชื่อมโยงความทรงจำ และโลกอนาคตที่มนุษย์ใฝ่ฝันหา

อี บุล ได้รับเชิญให้แสดงผลงานในพิพฺิธภัณฑ์และเข้าร่วมเทศกาลศิลปะสำคัญต่างๆ มากมายทั่วโลก ล่าสุดกลางปี 2561 เธอมีนิทรรศการเดี่ยวย้อนหลังที่่ Hayward Gallery กรุงลอนดอน มีผลงานตั้งแต่ยุคเริ่มต้นทศวรรษ 1980s จนถึงปัจจุบัน มากกว่า 100 ชิ้น ตั้งแต่งานศิลปะแสดงสดยุคบุกเบิกจนมาถึงงานศิลปะจัดวางขนาดใหญ่ที่เรียกร้องความสนใจจากผู้ชมได้เป็นอย่างดี
