Francesco Clemente is one of the renowned figures of the Italian Transavantgarde movement that emerged in the 1980s focusing on figurative art and symbolism as their artistic approach. In New York, Clemente became friends with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Traveling back and forth to India, Clemente’s experience and appreciation in the way of life, religious beliefs and local cultures have been incorporated in his art. For Bangkok Art Biennale, Clemente exhibits his latest miniatures that he collaborates with Indian miniaturists to produce extremely delicate paintings. Symbolic meanings hidden in these works result from lengthy journeys to India that can be compared to a pilgrimage in pursuit of spiritual calmness.
