This work is a continuation of Chen’s investigation into the body and performance of the (socially engineered) Singaporean identity. A group of former military band musicians from the Singapore Armed Forces are rounded up to play a jaunty tune of the military running cadence ‘Steamroller’ as they march through a disused school in Singapore. Shorn of their military band uniforms, the musicians appear as your average Joe, dressed in their own casual clothes, but still conforming to the usual decorum of the band. The artist, himself a former school band member, takes a humorous but aesthetically formal look at the (now discarded) regimens of a marching band, which he contrasts to the infinitely rehearsed and nationwide broadcasted military band marches that are performed annually at the National Day Parades on the 9th of August, where in a perverse ironic twist, these band players are not actually permitted to play live music.
