Heri Dono is famous for his experimental practice in which he utilizes traditional performance ‘wayang’ in contemporary practice. He merges local tradition and Java’s way of life. Critical of his country’s political transition, his multimedia works reflect paranoia, violence and depictions of interventions of globalization. For Dono, art is not only an exploration into aesthetic boundaries but something that provokes and reminds.

At East Asiatic Building, ‘Flying Angels’ are suspended precariously on the ceiling as they get ready to glide across the Chao Phraya River to meet their flock at the garden of The Peninsula Hotel. At Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, ‘Genetic Manipulation’ (2018), Dono playfully comments on censorious and suppressive cultural policies with humor and satire. Donosaurus creatures half human in uniform with Komodo dragon feet stand in regiment with yellow fans blowing to cool their backsides.

เฮริมีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังจากการทำงานทดลองที่ผสานวัฒนธรรมพื้นเมืองและวิถีชีวิตของชุมชนของชาวชวา อย่างหนังตะลุงวาหยัง (wayang) เข้ามาอยู่ร่วมในงานศิลปะจัดวางของเขา ผลงานของเขาเต็มไปด้วยความหวาดระแวง ความรุนแรง จนสัมผัสได้ถึงภาพของสังคมที่กำลังเปลี่ยนแปลงในปัจจุบัน รวมไปถึงปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศและในระดับโลก สำหรับเขาแล้ว ศิลปะไม่ได้เป็นเพียงการเข้าไปสำรวจเขตแดนของสุนทรียศาสตร์ แต่เป็นการกระตุกและเตือนใจคนดู

ที่อาคาร อีสต์ เอเชียติก ‘Flying Angels’ ถูกแขวนค้างไว้บนเพดานราวกับประติมากรรมชิ้นนี้ กำลังจะบินข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาไปสมทบกับพวกพ้องที่อยู่อีกฝั่งหนึ่ง ในสวนของโรงแรมเพนนินซูล่า อีกผลงานหนึ่ง ‘Genetic Manipulation’ (2018) ที่จัดแสดงที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร เป็นการวิจารณ์วัฒนธรรมการเมืองอย่างมีอารมณ์ขัน ตัว Donosaurus ในเครื่องแบบที่มีเท้าเป็นมังกรโคโมโดยืนอยู่เป็นกลุ่ม โดยมีพัดลมสีเหลืองเป่าบั้นท้าย
