‘Taualuga: The Last Dance’ is a performance and video work. It is a response to the photographic archive of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa which is comprised of photographs of Samoa during the colonial administration of New Zealand, from 1914 to 1962. The taualuga is a Samoan dance performed to both affirm Samoan resilience and lament the losses encountered in its colonial history. ‘Invocation’ is a single-channel video work that speaks to liulotofaga, an ancestral ceremony involving the exhumation of the bones of the deceased, cleaning and caring for these as a gesture of reconnecting with the ancestors. It performs an invocation of ancestral presence in the present.
