‘The Settlement’ (2017) is an enclosure wrapped in wood and galvanized sheets. Inside are mirror reflections that create the illusion of never-ending space. A rich archive of narratives and allegories of the Philippine’s past that include national heroes José Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, anti-colonialism, detention, destitution and martial law are referenced. In search for bliss, Justiniani digs deep into the traumatic past and infinity as part of the healing process, creating an illusion that lures viewers into a state of momentary comfort zone.
