Montien Boonma was one of the pioneers of the Thai contemporary art movement. After his return from Paris in the 1990s, Montien created a number of works in mixed media and installation art with a distinctive use of local materials to express the influx of industrial developments in the country’s rural areas. The subject of his artistic creation began to shift after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. His work became a search for the meaning of healing, life and death evident in ‘House of Hope’ (1997), an installation with herbs.

For Bangkok Art Biennale, ‘Zodiac Houses’ (1998) is a work about Montien’s quest for bliss and incarnation through astrological signs and outer space in order to contact the dead. Placed at Sala Kanparien (Sermon Hall), Wat Prayoon the dark Gothic-like sculptures stand eerily facing the gilded Dharma seat offering a prayer to communicate with the dead and afterlife.

ศิลปินผู้บุกเบิกศิลปะร่วมสมัยในไทย หลังจากกลับมาจากฝรั่งเศสในช่วงทศวรรษ 1990s มณเฑียร ทำงานศิลปะจัดวางและสื่อผสม ที่มีการนำวัสดุพื้นถิ่นเข้ามาใช้ในการทำงาน เพื่อพูดถึงการรุกคืบของอุตสาหกรรมที่กำลังไหลบ่าเข้ามาในชนบท อย่างไรก็ตามหัวข้อการทำงานศิลปะของศิลปินก็พลิกผัน เมื่อเขาทราบว่าภรรยาป่วยด้วยโรคมะเร็งทรวงอก ผลงานของมณเฑียรเริ่มหันเข้าสู่การค้นหาความหมายของการเกิด มีชีวิตอยู่ และการตาย อย่างเช่น ‘House of Hope’ (2540) อินสตอลเลชั่นขนาดใหญ่ที่ทำขึ้น จากสมุนไพร
